Owned and managed by Pima County, Agua Caliente Park is a former ranch and health resort which features three ponds fed by perennial groundwater. The park has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Working closely with County staff and within a tight project schedule, Westland developed construction documents that included the regrading of and new lining for the main large pond, a new pedestrian bridge, a new pond pump and aeration system and improvements to the existing landscape and irrigation system.

The Challenge

Owned and managed by Pima County, Agua Caliente Park is a former ranch and health resort which features three ponds fed by perennial groundwater. The park has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places. The facility was beset by a number of issues that compromised visitor experience and safety. WestLand was charged with the following concerns:

  • Address the invasive plant species that were dominating much of the upper pond.
  • Remedy the fact that this same pond was losing water.
  • Replace the pedestrian bridge in a manner that was sensitive to the previous structure.
  • Work within in a tight schedule to minimize disruption to the park in the springtime when numbers of migratory birds visit the site.

The Solution

Working closely with County Parks and Historic Preservation staff, Westland developed construction documents that included the design for a new pedestrian bridge to replace the unsafe historic structure. The project also incorporated the regrading of the pond, the removal of invasive vegetation and the replacement of the existing pond filtration system as well as improvements to existing paths, plant design and the irrigation system. WestLand landscape architects coordinated the efforts of electrical, civil and structural engineers.

The Result

Successful completion of bid-ready documents in fall, 2019, the project is partially complete.
