Cyprus Tohono Cultural Landscape

WestLand was contracted by the Cyrus Tohono Corporation to prepare a cultural landscape study of the Cyprus Tohono mine located on Tohono O’odham land near Casa Grande, Arizona.

The Cyprus Tohono property contains 71 cultural resources sites that together reflect prehistoric and historic period use of the landscape from hunting and gathering to ranching and mining.

Using a combination of previous archaeological studies, historical ethnographic data, archival research, and interviews with tribal elders, WestLand traced the use of the landscape from the perspective of Anglo miners and nearby O’odham communities.

The final report, which integrated the archival data and information gleaned during numerous oral history interviews with local O’odham elders and retired Anglo miners, used a landscape approach to describe the rich tapestry of human occupation at the Cyprus Tohono mine site.

The final report was accepted by the Tohono O’odham Tribal Historic Preservation Officer without comment and distributed to tribal members in local communities
