The Challenge
The non-profit retirement community south of Tucson required a larger entry statement to match their growing campus. The design process was complicated by the fact that the project required the inclusion of the community logo, the form of which contradicted the client’s desire for a horizontal wall.
The Solution
WestLand’s design incorporates the properties of masonry construction that allows for both vertical and horizontal curves. The singular feature of the monument is the internally illuminated steel beam that follows the masonry in both directions. Furthermore, since masonry and steel expand and contract at different rates, the beam is cleverly anchored to the masonry to allow independent movement in both directions.
The Result
Upon completion, the monument created an immediate impression on residents and has become a landmark for the surrounding community.
